Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at the Georgia National Fair, held at the Perry Agricenter in Perry, Georgia.

Time

This was taken around 9pm, right before the nightly fireworks show.

Lighting

I had to use enough of a long exposure to get the effect I wanted from the Ferris Wheel. The reflection from the lake was an accidental bonus as this was my first time shooting this scene. It has become an annual event now, with each year getting a little better. This being the first makes it hold a little special appeal. Also, there are now a few lights that need to be replaced, so I have yet to get a fully lit ferris wheel again.

Equipment

Nikon D600 with a Nikon 24-70 2.8 on a Manfrotto Tripod

Inspiration

I was going to the fair to shoot the fireworks. As I got there and claimed the spot I wanted to shoot the fireworks, I looked across at the Midway and it struck me what a great shot.

Editing

Minimal in Lightroom, Just popped the Vibrance and Saturation a little and bumped up the Blacks.

In my camera bag

Truly depends on what I am going to shoot. I have almost the entire range of Nikon Lens, so I pick and choose. If not sure I go with my 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8. It's a lot of weight but gives me the most versatility. If packing all day in daylight settings, I have my Nikon 28-300 .his one lens give me true versatility for everything but low light settings.

Feedback

The number one requirement for recreating this shot is a tripod. This shot requires a long enough exposure to get the spiral effect on the Ferris Wheel. Next I highly recommend a remote shutter release. Nikon has a wireless one, which I used for this shot, but I have switched to Vello ShutterBoss II Timer Remote Switch for Nikon. It gives you all the flexibilty you need to truly meet any creative need. Wonderful for shooting timelapse.
