Sunset late afternoonLighting
I wanted to catch the sun as it sank towards the horizon. I like the soft lighting as it is diffused through the cloud and that streak of light reflecting on the water.Equipment
Nikon coolpix p7700. Shot hand held as exposing for the sky with sun still above the horizon gave me a fast enough shutter speed.Inspiration
This wasn't the original shot I had in mind. I had planned for an empty jetty to use as a lead in to the setting sun. However when I arrived this guy was fishing on the end. I was drawn to the tranquility and solitude of the scene and chose to silhouette him against the setting sun.Editing
I corrected the white balance and applied some minor sharpening. The shadows in the water were lightened a little and that's it. Exposing for the sky automatically sillhouete the person. In my camera bag
Usually it's a Nikon d7100 and 16-35 lens. Always nd grads. Tripod essential. Remote release, a torch, some chocolate and that's it! On this occasion I was oh holiday so had a compact p7700. It shoots raw but without filters and interchangable lens forces you to re consider how you normally shoot and the compositions you adopt.Feedback
landscapes don't always have to be the great sweeping vistas. Don't be afraid to try something new. Adding a human element can add a new aspect to an image. Be open to ideas. Be spontaneous . Just click! As in all photography the light is key. It changes so fast particularly at sunset. You have to keep looking. Arrive early and set up in good time. I find there is a period of calm where I can soak up the view, consider composition and then a frantic period shooting as the sun sinks and the light changes. Ultimately nature makes the image - it's up to you to capture it!
