Behind The Lens

Location

I am an amateur photographer, still at the bottom half of the learning curve. Sadly I can manage very little time and resources for this hobby of mine, and as a result almost all my pictures are taken in and around my house. There is this custard apple tree in my neighboring yard that has been growing particularly well. A few branches of the tree had grown on to the roof of the house, with its mix of young and old leaves. This photo was taken from the roof top of my house.

Time

I distinctly remember the day and time I took this photo. The monsoons were in full swing. It was late afternoon on a Sunday, after the usual heavy downpour. I went up to the roof hoping to catch the golden hour colors in the sky. But the sky was too overcast for any such possibility. It was then that I noticed the rain drops on the custard apple leaves. Thus was born this photo.

Lighting

The light that day was soft and dull. The

Equipment

This photo was captured using the only camera I own, an Olympus E-PM1. I had a 40-150mm lens on it while taking this photo.

Inspiration

This custard apple tree is marked to be chopped down along with a few other trees. In its place will come a new apartment building. I feel that this is a representative of the times - blind destruction of nature for the so called 'development'. The thought of losing this tree which gives much needed shade and respite from the heat during summer has been disturbing me much.

Editing

I try to keep post-processing to the minimum possible, but that was not to happen on this photo. I had a certain emotion in my mind regarding this picture so I took some Photoshop help. The B/W Conversion in the NIK software collection helped to achieve the mood I desired.

In my camera bag

My Olympus E-PM1 with the 40-150mm lens is a sure-fire passenger in my camera bag. The 40-150mm gets preference over the 14-42mm kit lens due to its ability to let in more light. My basic (unbranded) flash is my best friend when it comes to portrait photography. Coupled with my 60cm softbox, it helps to illuminate faces beautifully. The kit lens is used mainly for landscape photography. In addition, I use a B+W 3 stop ND filter and an unbranded tripod for my landscape photography endeavors.

Feedback

My first advice would be to look for shapes, patterns and textures in nature. In nature you can find all three in plants. Any kind of plant will provide you with these building blocks of an interesting photograph, but you may not notice them immediately. This brings me to my second point that is look closer. Some times you may have to zoom in or even better would be to use a macro lens to get the abstract pattern in your frame.
