The light was actually pretty harsh, I am a self taught photographer and I had just gotten my first DSLR, so I spent a lot of time changing the settings to get the right look.Equipment
This photograph was taken with just a Nikon D5300 and a 50/1.8 lens.Inspiration
We were taking family photographs and my daughter was sitting there. I was testing out settings and this photo turned out perfect.Editing
I don't do a lot of post-processing, in this instance, I only changed the image to black and white and cropped out some distracting elements. In my camera bag
I have an 18-200 lens and a 50/1.8 prime lens in my camera bag at all times. I also always carry a tripod and remote shutter release, spare battery, pen, and chap stick.Feedback
Take the time, when you can, to adjust your settings and see what the different settings look like when you take an image. The exposure triangle is a good start, but it is not the only "rule" that you need.
