Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Little Douglas bay just off of hull road north west of my town.

Time

It was taken around midday I’d gone with a friend for a drive and we went walking on the way back this flower just looked great and posed a challenge to my skill level it was my first time using macro settings. This was one of two photos of this subject that turned out clear but this was the only one that gave the effect of the flower floating above the earth.

Lighting

The lighting was a bit difficult it was an autumn day at around midday so the light was almost directly above which helped with the effect of the flower floating but made it hard to not get shadows in the photo.

Equipment

I just used a Nikon s2900 nothing special just a simple camera but as I’ve come to see some times it’s not the equipment you use but how you use it and this was definitely one of those days. Even the best camera couldn’t have captured the picture without me looking through the lens telling it what to photograph.

Inspiration

I don’t think anything particular inspired me to be honest I just saw the colour of the flower and wanted to see what other colours I might bring out in the flower using editing. This photo alone has created 10 others all with different editing to bring out different colours and textures.

Editing

Yes naturally, this version only has minimal editing done to it just a basic clean up and auto level over the photo to make the colour more natural otherwise nothing was done to this photo but there are others that have been turned negative or had the colour changed to suit what I want.

In my camera bag

Honestly if I remember it a Nikon s2900 and my iPhone I don’t have fancy gear but as I’ve said I dont find that it’s really necessary it’s not the camera that’s makes the photo it’s the photographer.

Feedback

Take your time and line up the shot the way you want it then take multiple shots so you can choose your best. Time is your enemy if you go out with a set time to be back you won’t get anything worthwhile because you will rush and miss the best things. Always stop and look around at the environment you’re in then find something that would normally be overlooked and create your masterpiece with it. Don’t be afraid to edit your photos and definitely don’t be afraid to share them you might think it’s nothing but someone else might think it’s worth something. The more common the object (these flowers grow wild and everyone hates them) and the more outlandish the way the photo is done (a flower floating no matter how common the flower) is something that will always draw the eye in and make people stop and look at it. The main thing is don’t be afraid even the most average photo can be turned into something special.
