Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from my deck in Beachlands, Auckland, New Zealand. We get some pretty epic sunsets down here, so lots of opportunities to hone my skills.

Time

Taken during the evening. I'm really lucky that my living room has a great view out over this scene so i can monitor how the sunset develops and how the clouds are adding to the theatrics. So many people have a great view over the ocean here but i have the beauty of some amazing native bushland that silhouettes beautifully at this time in the evening, just have to balance my camera right, enjoy a beer and drink in the next amazing sunset.

Lighting

I love it when clouds have the sun bursting out from behind them. I find it really symbolic of many failed attempts at being creative, having an amazing idea that is hiding away behind my cloud of inability, be that with my camera or my paintbrushes. But with patience and practice those clouds eventually clear to the allow the idea to shine to its fullest.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 1100D, with the standard EF-S 18-55mm, on a cheap and cheerful starter tripod. No other equipment used.

Inspiration

We get so many amazing sunsets here. I'm originally from England and moved here around 7 seven years ago. One of the things that has struck me is the quality of light that we get in the morning and evenings. It seems like they are just much more intense, deep blues in the morning and striking pinks in the evening. Everywhere we go in this beautiful country I'm inspired by what i see, its just my ability/experience behind the camera that's holding me back.

Editing

I don't yet know how to do any real photo editing outside of the Photo Gallery tools or Image Composite Editor, so all my photos are as they were taken.

In my camera bag

I only have the one camera, my Canon 1100D, and two lens. Canon EF-S 18 - 35mm and Canon EF 75 - 300mm for that added zoom ability.

Feedback

i'm still at a very basic understanding of how to use my camera effectively. THey more i read about technique and actually get out and put it into practice the better my pictures are getting. I've stopped expecting to get good shots if i don't put the time and patience in, so i now either go out to shoot on my own or end up in the dog box after upsetting the wife for taking an age to "just take the picture!"
