This picture was taken at Forward Operating Base Apache in Regional Command South right before we set off to face the reality and horror war so proudly embraces. This walk had more anxiety intertwined with an unknown certainty that we would be face to face with people who hated me so much that they would gladly die trying to kill me and my friends. This is a hard thought to process and I wanted to capture the raw emotions of each soldier, not as a journalist but as soldier that was experiencing the same emotions and would have to face the same fears. My intent was to capture a bigger story with this photo and show my audience the morale conflict and pain each young man (me included) and woman endures right before facing the horrific reality that this abnormal and overwhelming situation will most likely lead you to killing another human being, that was a son, brother, father or the unbearable thought that you might have to bury a friend. I named this photo Inevitable because no matter what I did I had to face the reality that I was heading into the unknown and I was going to be in pain for the rest of my life because of it.
