My brothers farm in western North Carolina. The log barn was originally built in 1908 by my great grandfather. My brother moved part of the larger barn across the creek and road and saved the first original log structure. Widening the state road required part of the barn to be moved back. To me its a story of three generations of our family farming in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. From 1908 log barn to a modern day tractor.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in Sorrells Cove North Carolina deep in the Smoky Mountains. This is a photograph of my great-grandfather's barn that Is still standing on the original family farm. My brother now uses it for his farming.

Time

I have got up early in the morning and walk outside in the morning fog. The fog in this area of the Smoky Mountains doesn't rise until about 11:30. During that time photography is great. I was walking down the country road that goes to the farm and looked over and saw this. I should add that this farm is about 4800 feet above sea level.

Lighting

The lighting was sheer luck. The sun had begin to rise and shine through the fog which lit up as you see this photograph.

Equipment

This was a handheld photograph shot with the Nikon D6 10.

Inspiration

The Sorrels Cove Farm has always been a very beautiful area. I have shot photographs of this farm for many years. There just doesn't seem to be any angle I can't get enough of. The fog is really what captured my eye at this moment.

Editing

Used Lightroom and changed it to black-and-white. Beyond that I might've tweaked the highlights and shadows slightly but that's it.

In my camera bag

I usually keep a wide angle lens, a UV haze filter, small tripod.

Feedback

I have to say this photograph was timing and luck. One thing I suggest is for the photographer is to have your camera with you all the time. You never know when the moment is going to be right in front of you.
