Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my front yard in Waukesha, Wisconsin

Time

The photo was taken on a summer afternoon, probably around 4:00PM.

Lighting

The lighting was all natural. No flash or indirect lighting was used.

Equipment

The camera I used to take this photo was a Canon Rebel XSi. I've since given it to my mother to use and it ended up on a trip to China! The lens I used was a Canon f/4 70-200 non-IS.

Inspiration

This was my first introduction to my daughters new cat. She had just picked him up from the shelter and wanted to show me the new addition to the family. We were letting him walk around in the grass and explore.

Editing

I really did not do too much post-processing on this photo. I did run it through Lightroom and did some minor sharpening and exposure adjustments, and that's about it.

In my camera bag

Canon 7D Mark II, back up camera is a Canon 7D. Canon Speedlite 430XII, Tamron f/2.8 17-50mm, Canon f/4 70-200, Canon f2.0 100mm. I can also haul some big glass if needed. Canon f/4 300mm, Canon f4.5 500mm, Tamron f5-6.3 150-600mm I will also on occasion use an iPhone 6S-Plus and GoPro Session.

Feedback

It's pretty tough to pose a kitten, so you've got to go with what they give you! Use a lens with enough distance so you're not scary or intimidating. When you're subject is small, you need a low ground level perspective. You need to get down to their level, so it doesn't look like you were standing on a ladder. I always try to focus on the eyes, and regardless of the aperture, you'll usually get a nice shot. Because small animals tend to move around a lot, keeping a fast shutter speed in mind will help you get a nice, clean, sharp photo. And don't hesitate to put your camera in high burst to increase your chances at getting a real keeper!
