Location
This photo was taken in Radium Hot Springs, BC (Canada), on the border of Banff National Park, Alberta.Time
This was taken around noon time. I was there taking photos of these guys for a couple of hours. They were all in the same area and didn't seem to mind me being around.Lighting
It was a sunny day, but I was lucky that it was shining in another direction, allowing for me to take photos without shooting into the sun.Equipment
That day, I had my Nikon 5200D with a lens belonging to my partner's full frame camera. I was able to get almost as close to these guys as a telephoto lens would. It was handheld, and I always have a UV filter on the lenses I use.Inspiration
I was observing these guys in their environment without disturbing them. Some photos I took were close up, others were of them cuddling, and some were of them fighting. I was lucky to catch them mid air! I enjoy watching animals and how they act. It was the perfect day to photograph them.Editing
I don't use Photoshop, however I use Lightroom to make minor tweaks. This is mostly for correcting exposure. Any more than a few minutes of editing is too much for me.In my camera bag
Other than my camera, I always have a few extra batteries, a tripod, a few often-used lenses, a lenspen/ blower/ cloth, and a remote for slow shutter photography. I also usually have a snack handy in case I spend more time than I planned!Feedback
With animals, I shoot using automatic focusing, generally increase my ISO, keep my f-stop low, and shoot at a speed no slower than around 1/500 (obviously this depends on the lighting and other considerations). As well, practice, practice, practice! I've taken many photos that I thought were good only to see that they were blurry! If you have moving subjects and you're trying to focus with every move they make, it won't turn out as planned! I've learned that the hard way!
