This photo was taken in a doors-off helicopter flights over ManhattanTime
The photo was taken in the afternoon. I really wanted to get in the sky for sunrise or sunset, but the afternoon is what they had available so I just went with it!Lighting
I wish it had been sunset!Equipment
Canon t3i with a 10-18mm f4.5-5.6Inspiration
I've gotta be honest here, I was constantly snapping away as the pilot did a full circle around the Freedom Tower, so I guess my inspiration here was to get the best possible angle I could! What I like about this angle is that it captures the whole feeling of downtown Manhattan, along with the Brooklyn & Manhattan Bridges leading into Downtown Brooklyn.Editing
Nothing too elaborate here, some simple contrast and sharpening bumps. In my camera bag
I usually shoot all mirrorless and keep it simple. Since I'm always shooting in places that are hard to get to, I like to keep it small and portable. My main setup now is a Lumix Gm5 with a 12-32mm lens and an insignia pocket tripod. I can literally fit the whole setup in my pocket!Feedback
If you're scared to go in a helicopter (like I was), I recommend that you just overcome your fear and give it a try. It was truly an amazing experience seeing my beautiful city from a birds eye view. As soon as we got into the sky, my fear disappeared and my photographic instincts took over. Try and go during the golden hour! Although NYC looks beautiful from above during any hour, the colors would be magnificent at sunset. I plan on booking another flight for sunset as soon as I can.
