Behind The Lens

Location

As part of a tour in the Alps, we stayed a night in spectacular Hallstatt, Austria, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our hotel was the historic Gruener Baum, the yellow building just left of the church.

Time

Just before 7 AM local time, mist still hung above parts of the lake. There was little activity in the village or on the lake, except for one lone swan, barely visible in the lower right.

Lighting

At that time, the sun had risen just enough to illuminate the village and surrounding mountains, creating the effect seen here.

Equipment

At that time, I was using a Panasonic Lumix LX-7, hand-held.

Inspiration

I think the scene in the photo is the best answer to this question.

Editing

This is actually a composite panorama of two shots stitched together. Each was shot in RAW, with adjustments to exposure and contrast in post, as well as some perspective correction and cropping.

In my camera bag

I'm now using a Lumix LX-100 for most shots. Though I often have a tripod and assorted filters along, I rarely use them, preferring the spontaneity of shooting hand-held.

Feedback

Get up early, painful as it may seem at the time. Early morning light makes all the difference. (Evening is not as good here, as the sun is on the wrong side of the village and mountains.)
