Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while taking a stroll along a path in the park overlooking a marsh where each time I take this particular path, I find something new every day. I am pretty much a self-taught photographer with little to no formal training. I basically do it for the love of the art itself. But, over the past couple of years, I began studying photography as well as talking to other professional photographers throughout this interesting journey and find that by talking to others in the field is indeed the greatest educational experience.

Time

The time of day was 5:10 p.m. on September 14, 2015. I find this to be the best time of day for me to walk and enjoy what nature has to offer after a long and stressful day.

Lighting

The natural light this time of day is quite adequate. So, I wanted to play around with different shutter speeds and various other settings that would allow me to capture my subject in the best light possible, using only the sun’s light. This particular shot was the most interesting to me because of the way the natural light highlight the objects shown in the photograph while allowing for just enough depth of field (DoF).

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3200 camera. The lens was a 70-300mm, f/5.6 made by Tamron. I didn’t use my flash or any other equipment to shoot this photo. I actually took my camera off of the tripod so that I could get a more hands on shot of the butterfly while at the same time, trying to keep up with it. It was quite lively, to say the least!

Inspiration

I recall spending most of the afternoon searching for butterflies to photograph. Butterflies are truly my favorite!!!! So, I developed an even greater passion for photographing them.

Editing

I did very little post-processing with this particular photo, only because I did not have my camera set in RAW at the time. It wasn’t until this year, I started shooting in RAW for the sake of post-processing and it’s the only way to go for me from this point forward. I guess you can say, I’ve finally arrived!!

In my camera bag

I usually carry an extra battery, my D3200 Nikon camera body, three sizes of lenses; i.e., Nikon 18-55mm, Nikon 55-200mm, Tamron 70-300mm, a couple of different filters, a monopod/tripod, an external flash and business cards which isn’t considered as equipment, but something one should be equipped with!

Feedback

When shooting a moving object, you have to be still when it is still. Any tiny bit of movement will startled your subject, particularly butterflies and you can end up with not so great photos. Photographing butterflies can be very difficult. It’s best when using a tripod or a very still set of hands and a whole lot of patience of course!
