Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while me and my friends were backpacking in Grand Escalante National Monument, Utah.

Time

After an exhausting day of hiking through the heat my friends and I rounded this bend in the river and came across this massive arch. It was near the middle of the day and gave us the encouragement we needed to keep going.

Lighting

I didn't have a lot of choices with my lighting being outside and on a time crunch to get to our camp so I had to work with what I was given. Thankfully it worked out!

Equipment

My camera is an entry level DSLR (my first one) a Nikon D3300 with the kit lens. I also used a tripod to keep everything stable.

Inspiration

I love adventure and I have always wanted to share my adventure with others, which is what inspired me to get into photography in the first place. I especially love it when I can have a subject in my photo to give a good sense of scale which is something that I feel can easily be missed when taking landscape photos.

Editing

I used Adobe Lightroom on this to lighten the shadows and to enhance to color of the canyon walls to better mirror how I remember the color looking when I was actually there.

In my camera bag

All I have is my camera, lens cleaner, some darkening filters and a tripod. For multi day trips like this I have to be very strategic as to what I choose to bring and what I choose to leave behind.

Feedback

My best advice is to just get outside. I love the outdoors and seeing alien like landscapes like this. A photo captures it but truly experiencing it is something else altogether.
