Behind The Lens

Location

Kyoto Station's Skyway - a tourist attraction providing some excellent views of the city below and the station itself, especially during nighttime.

Time

Can't remember the exact time, but it was definetely well into the late evening/early nighttime. We arrived at the station at sunset, and spent plenty of time there before reaching the Skyway.

Lighting

The Skyway's lights provided some illumination, however I still needed some bumping of the ISO and opening of the aperture to ensure I could take the shot with the camera hand-held. Fortunately, it turned out just fine.

Equipment

Just my trusty mirrorless Sony NEX-6 with a 24mm Zeiss lens.

Inspiration

The Skyway feels a bit like a really long tunnel when you reach it for the first time. You can't really see where it ends, where do these straight lines lead to. And with our guide standing right in the middle, it created a visual relationship almost begging to be captured.

Editing

Some Lightroom tweaks - adjustments to the lighting, vibrance and clarity, contrast increase via tone curve, some noise reduction and minor vignetting increase - I'm not big into very heavy postprocessing. However, I believe this might be a third or fourth iteration of the edit, I kept coming back to it until I became fully satisfied with this very version.

In my camera bag

Depending on the situation, my photo bag's contents may vary greatly - from just having the Sony's convenient small body on me when I go out (just in case something worthy capturing turns up in front of me), to having my 5D MkII with three lenses (including a huge Sigma zoom), bunch of CF cards and a spare battery when I go out specifically to shoot something. For this shot, it was the first variant.

Feedback

Be mindful of your surroundings and your personal, subjective experience they create. The short, initial"oh!" moment may fade away quickly, and the idea for a cool shot right with it.
