Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my kitchen! The kitchen bench was about waist height, so it was not uncomfortable for my pregnant belly and the bathroom taps were too low and i didn't like the look of the outside tap either. I took this photo about 10 years ago and i was just beginning my photography journey, i went out and bought camera magazines for inspiration and found an article on water droplets!

Time

I planned to take the photo in the middle of the afternoon, so the sunlight would flow straight through the small window to the left of the tap, but it was too bright, so i tried the next morning with minimal light coming through the window. It was a dark kitchen and i needed some natural light.

Lighting

I didn't really spend too much time on the lighting, i just knew i wanted to take a photo of a water drop and that was it. i didn't have the kitchen light on when i took this shot and the sun was shining on the other side of the house, so the kitchen was in the shade.

Equipment

I used my canon 1000D with the 18-55mm lens. no flash, no tripod. To keep the camera still i simply laid it on the edge of the sink and just adjusted the focal length until i was happy.

Inspiration

I read all these fabulous stories of knowledgeable photographers, who spend a lot of time planning and setting the stage so to speak, truth be told, water droplets were all the rage, when i took this photo, so i simply wanted to see if i could try to capture a decent photo of a water droplet. It wasnt easy either! i took many, many blurry pictures, many i took too soon, and many i took too late too.

Editing

No i didnt use post processing on this photo. to be honest it all scares me a little bit, i have never used any post processing on any of my photos. One day i hope to learn how it all works.

In my camera bag

In my Bag i have my trusty Canon 1000D with the 18-55mm lens and also my 75-300mm lens. It does the job well. I also have a couple of extra SD cards, incase i forget to put the one i just used to download my recent photos onto my computer back in the camera.( it has happened more than once and i can tell you i have felt grateful for it).

Feedback

Any advice? well, first, just keep clicking and clicking and click some more... because you can always delete the ones that didn't work later right? second, if your not quite happy with the lighting then try something else, maybe change the options on your camera or turn on the light and see what happens. and third patience. patience is a virtue and it took me a long while to get this shot. In the end i was on my knees, squinting through the camera viewfinder almost in tears, thinking to myself that if i didn't get a good shot in the next 5 minutes i will just try again another day, when I'm not so upset!!
