I took this picture just a mile from my home in Miles City, Montana this spring. I am an amateur hobby photographer.Time
This is one of those epic pictures that you never forget capturing. Over the years I've tried so hard to capture lightening. On the evening of April 15, 2016 my husband called me and told me there was a large storm moving our way. I ran out of the house with my iPhone 5s and Canon EOS Rebel T5i. I took over 400 pictures with my Canon and did not capture one good picture. At my wits end I pulled out my iPhone, aimed, and hit the burst mode. I took several shots this way before the storm was upon me and I was being pelted with hail. I had to retreat to my car and drive home in a torrential hail storm. I did not even know I had this picture until I started going through them all. When I say it I was so excited! It took my breath away!Lighting
In this situation the dark lighting caused by the storm made capturing this picture very difficult with my Canon. I'm not very educated in this aspect and the light was constantly changing. The pictures I did capture with my Canon were very grainy. Don't give up if this happens. Watch You Tube videos, study your camera setting, and use your failures as a learning experience. I was very fortunate that my iPhone saved the day!Equipment
I used my iPhone 5s on burst mode, hand held, after failing to capture a good picture with my Canon EOS T5i with a tripod.Inspiration
I have always wanted to capture lightening.Editing
The only post processing I did was to adjust the lighting. In my camera bag
I normally take my Canon and iPhone with me everywhere I go. I do keep a tripod with me but rarely take the time to use it. I keep my standard kit lenses with me for my Canon. For my iPhone I keep a small tripod, Olloclip macro lenses, and a selfie stick to achieve unusual angles, NOT for selfies! Always have extra batteries and car chargers for batteries. One thing I have found very important to keep with me is a blanket. You never know when you need to get down on the ground or onto an unusual surface to take a picture, and a blanket or sheet can be a lifesaver!Feedback
In Montana our weather is very unpredictable. Being patient and prepared is a must. Don't give up just because you don't capture what you want the first, second, or fiftieth time! Weather is like a small child, you can't make it do what you want it to! You have to wait for that perfect moment and be ready for it!
