Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Spring of 2016 in S'Arenal, Majorca.

Time

It was around midday. The sun was high in the sky, the waves were rolling in, there were a lot of people bustling around - it was a good day to be out and about exploring a new town.

Lighting

The lighting was pretty good, albeit bright and making everyone squint. The sun was high in the sky, there was little in the way of cloud cover and everything looked well lit.

Equipment

I used a Canon Eos 1200D, Tamron 18-270mm DII VC lens and nothing else .

Inspiration

I like to capture the goings on during the day rather than having to get people to pose. We had stopped for a bite to eat for lunch and were sat on the beach wall whilst waiting for the waitress to seat us. As with any holiday photographer, the camera is never far from the eye and when she sat down it was a great opportunity to get a shot!

Editing

There was a little bit of post-processing; I used Lightroom to adjust the exposure - the original was slightly brighter in the sky and the subject was a lot darker. After adjusting the lighting, I brought out the highlights and darkened the shadows. The clarity was increased slightly and the contrast reduced.

In my camera bag

In my bag I normally carry a Canon eos 60D with battery grip, 50mm F1.8, 18-270mm Tamron DII VC, Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 DC EX HSM, Sigma 70-300mm, Canon 70-210 USM, various filters, and sometimes a flash if its going to be getting dark whilst I'm out and about. Sometimes I also carry a Sigma 150-600 F5-6.3 DG OS HSM C.

Feedback

The only advice I would give is that you need to be patient - the right moment will come along. I find it hard to direct and get people to pose so allowing them to act naturally and enjoy their surroundings always seems to pay off. Also, don't be afraid of taking several shots of the same situation, I do. I'll often have my camera set to burst mode and capture 3-10 shots of the same subject in a short space of time - you'll normally get at least one shot that is crisp, sharp and a good colour level.
