This is a composite of a number of photos. The mountains are in Vancouver, the water is in Mexico, and the rock islands are actually a 60 cm tall "scholars' rock" display in a Buddhist Temple in Richmond. The writing on the rock is from an ancient Chinese poem by JIA DAO (779 - 843) which is the name of the poem and the name of this image.

Wonderful creativity without the slightest overdoing, and thanks for the honesty.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo is a composite. The three sea stacks/mountains are only about 50 cm tall, I found them in a Buddhist temple in Richmond, BC. The water is from a beach in Mexico, and the mountains are the north shore mountains of North Vancouver, All images were combined in PhotoShop CC and the fog/low clouds were also added in PS.

Time

The different photos were taken at different times or day and year.

Lighting

I tried to match the lighting for all of the shots. Keeping the light as diffused as possible minimizes the chance of conflicting shadows.

Equipment

I shoot Nikon D750 and Sony a6000. The water may have been shot with a D300s, I can't recall. I use my Nikkor 28-300mm a lot, and my Tamron 15-30mm. Also use my Nikkor 60 mm macro for close up work. Use my Manfrotton tripod when I can. Studio lighting is done with speedlights and modifiers.

Inspiration

I think reality is greatly overrated and prefer to "invent" photographs rather than "take" them." You can't take a photo of something that isn't there, but that doesn't keep me from trying. I'm not above cheating. In fact I constantly cheat. But I never pretend that the images are what I, or the camera, saw.

Editing

I can't imagine not doing any post processing. I don't think I've ever been happy with anything SOOC. I shoot RAW so what comes out of the camera is very "flat" and doesn't matter how good a photographer you are a certain amount of PP is essential.

In my camera bag

Nikon D750, Nikkor 28-300mm, Tamron 15-130mm, Nikkor 60 macro, Nikkor 50 mm f1.4, ND filters, 2 Nikon Speedlights, cable release, ND filters, CP filter, extra batteries and cards.

Feedback

Learn to use PS. The learning curve it fairly steep, but the program can work magic. After thousands of hours in PS I'm still learning new stuff all the time. LR is also essential for cataloguing and first round of edits. The Nik now DoX suite is also extremely useful.
