Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Sydney while on holiday there in March/ April 2016. The photo is taken from Mrs MacQuaries Chair / Mrs MacQuaries Point. A lovely sunset of the Sydney Opera House. Took this after we had come off the cruise ship Carnival Legend. We only had a very short time in Sydney.

Time

The time of day is evening at sunset.

Lighting

Using natural light. Lovely orange sunset lighting.

Equipment

The camera I ‘m using now is Canon EOS 5D Mark ll with a Tamron 28 to 300 mm. Since I was on holiday overseas I didn’t have my normal equipment like my tripod & remote. Instead of using tripod I just rested my camera on a stable ledge & used the timer instead of a remote.

Inspiration

I’d been told by a friend to go to Mrs MacQuaries Chair not realising until we got to Sydney that there is also Mrs MacQuaries Point as well. I’d looked this place up on the internet to see what its like. No wonder there was so many people their taking photos.

Editing

I only ever do minimal post processing. I have photoshop Elements 11 & used for this photo enhance auto levels of contrast, colour correction & lighten shadows & darken highlights.

In my camera bag

I normally have in my bag of gear, now I have 2 x Canon EOS 5D Mark 2 bodies, lenses a Tamron 28mm - 300mm & a Tamron 150mm - 600mm, a wireless remote which come in very handy & gets used a lot, ND & ND graduated filters, a small torch, and some cleaning gear.

Feedback

Night photography can very rewarding. Scout out different spots (even if you have to google where you are going like I did for this trip. Especially if it’s your first time) to take these photos but if doesn't work out try again until you are happy with the shot. Use a tripod & doing long exposure's always turn of the image stabilization, I learnt this a couple of years ago after going out on a night shoot & came back with all my photo's out of focus & took me a while to find out why. Always use a tripod & a remote. Have fun playing around with exposure's this is the way I learnt. Like on this holiday you have to make do with what you have with you. You can’t always take what you need on a overseas holiday. Happy shooting everyone.
