Weeeeeelll... Frankly I got lucky. I'd just purchased my first DSLR and went for a walk in Pioneer Plaza on the south side of Downtown Dallas, TX. No idea what I was doing as far as the camera settings. I saw this squirrel who was completely unafraid and managed to get pretty close to him as I messed with various settings, reading the help as I went. I took about 300 pictures of him with different settings as he was happily moving around and munching away. This one came out really well as far as the framing, the light, and where he happened to be standing. Important lesson: One way to take amazing pictures as an amateur photographer is to just take a LOT of pictures with different settings, see what you like, and keep track of what works in a notebook dedicated to the topic.Time
Mid-afternoon on an overcast day.Lighting
It was an semi-overcast day, so the light was very even if not especially golden.Equipment

Excitement over a new camera.Editing
Not too much - The color saturation on the Nikon 3300 is generally awesome, so some slight adjustments to saturation and minimal messing around with the white, blacks, highlights and shadows, then a simple crop. Nothing magic. In my camera bag
These days, I have a Nikon lens pen, some basic filters, and a lens shroud - as well as whatever lenses I think will work best for where-ever I'm going. I do a lot of shooting with my Nikon 18-300 zoom. For an amateur photographer shooting during the day, it's an extremely good option for general photography.Feedback
Find tame squirrels who will hang around while you take a ton of pictures, experiment with different settings. Enjoy beginner's luck while it lasts? ;)
