Behind The Lens

Location

I’m relatively new to boudoir and had been working with a model for a couple of shoots, when she suggested that some of her friends were keen to be photographed. That sounded pretty good to me so they hired a room in a hotel in Auckland, New Zealand and off we went.

Time

We started shooting early afternoon, using some natural light from a big window plus some strobes that I had brought along. The models just took turns at posing with each girl trying to outpost the other. It was very spontaneous and such a lot of fun. We decided we didn’t like the cream bed head so switched to some sparkly purple fabric, which added a bit more glitz.

Lighting

For lighting I relied on a couple of Elinchrom BRX500 lights, plus a couple of Elinchrom BRX250 lights all with Portalite Square soft boxes. There are nice and light and easy to shift to a location. The image shown, had the main light on camera left and some gentle fill on camera right. Then we added some bounce off the ceiling to create a bright, fresh look.

Equipment

For this shoot I used a Nikon D4 and Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 G ED. I like the study feel and the ability to get in close if I need to.

Inspiration

We were keen to take some sophisticated boudoir shoots with a touch of elegance and class, so we had brought along some fur and feathers to create a rich look and add some texture. It all worked out pretty well and we managed to create a whole series of pretty enticing shots. In this photo we see Jazmine looking very confident and alluring.

Editing

I am a great believer in post processing and use Adobe Lightroom for basic adjustments to balance the light and do other simple things like cropping, then I will play with Adobe Photoshop to smooth skin and fix up any defects.

In my camera bag

I am use to shooting in my studio where I have far to much gear, so when I go on location I am always worried I will leave stuff behind. So I have a great big knapsack case, that I stuff with everything that I think I will need. So there is the Nikon D4 and Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 plus a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 as that basically covers everything. Then for special effects I use a PC-E Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/2.8D tilt and shift. A few primes and for getting in close I love my AF Micro-Nikkor 200mm f/4D IF-ED

Feedback

I think this shoot worked well because I had a good group of three girls, who all enjoyed working together and bouncing ideas off each other. I wanted to keep it very natural so by making it fun for everyone, we were able to get very simple natural poses where the models were relaxed and cheerful. Also the other models could see how a pose was starting to look so they knew what to do when it was their turn. By minimising the need to give to many instructions, I think it helped make this a successful shoot. It was certainly a lot of fun and for those that are hesitant to try this genre, don't wait any longer. Fly into it as it is great fun.
