Behind The Lens

Location

My boyfriend is a musician and had left his trusty old acoustic guitar lying around in a spot with some nice natural light and I had just bought myself a new lens that could open the aperture right up so this seemed like a perfect test subject. As someone still learning about photography I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!

Time

I believe this was taken in the afternoon just before Christmas, we had been out all day Christmas shopping and getting back into the house for a moment of calm was ideal. This shot seemed to suit the mirror the mood nicely, what was loud was now calm, relaxed and still.

Lighting

I was very lucky with the lighting on this shot, I didn't have to alter anything. It was a late afternoon shot in the winter with a grey sky coming in through the shutters that seemed to diffuse the light very nicely without it being too harsh or coloured. I am a big fan of natural night and it seemed to lend itself well to this shot and bring out the colour of the wood in the guitar quite nicely.

Equipment

I shoot with a Canon Rebel Sl1 and for this shot needed no flash or tripod but used my Canon EF 50mm F1.8 lens with a wide aperture to get the blurring to the back of the picture.

Inspiration

A cross between experimentation with a new lens and seeing an oppurtunity and going for it. Looking back at the picture does take me back to a calm and still afternoon at the start of the winter, I believe we had just had our first snowfall and that quiet hush of the snow seemed to emanate around the house, this image of something that could produce so much noise and joy just lying still and calm seemed to reflect my mood and thoughts on the day.

Editing

On this particular shot I did not. I wanted to keep it natural and simple.

In my camera bag

My current bag, consists of my Canon Sl1 body and kit 18-55 mm lens in addition to my 50 mm Prime f/1.8 lens. I am fairly new to the art of photography and would love to add lenses to my collection but for now, this is all I have. I do however also have a neutral density and UV filter for my kit lens, as often I want to be able to zoom out for those soft blurry neutral density shots. A tripod and remote are also necessities for those nice long exposure shots. I also seem to be using my prime lens a lot as it takes really nice pictures with minimal effort so was treated to a nice polarising filter for that lens which I love on bright summer days to really make those natural colours pop.

Feedback

This was almost a fluke shot for me so I think the advice I would give would simply be, keep your eyes and mind open to anything around you that may inspire you to take oout your camera for a quick snap. Sometimes its the most candid of shots that surprise you and turn out the best. They do say after all, that the only photo you will regret, is the one you didn't take...
