Pied kingfishers are a common resident at Southern African freshwater wetlands where they can be seen diving for small fish. The males (as seen in this photograph) have a black double breast band whereas females have an incomplete single band. This photo was taken at the St. Lucia wetlands in Kwa-Zulu Natal.
