Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of a utility pole was taken on the sidewalk at a fairly busy suburban intersection in a northwest Austin, Texas neighborhood.

Time

Around 7 a.m.

Lighting

The morning sunlight captured my eye with the shadows and high contrast it created on the nail studded pole.

Equipment

I agree with many photographers who say that the best camera you own is the one you have with you. This time it was my trusty iPhone 6 Plus that I “wear” when I take my morning runs. It’s kinda hard to run with my Nikon!

Inspiration

I am always in the lookout on my runs for a “Kodak Moment.” It might be an urban street scene or a stunning patch of Texas wildflowers. On this morning the gnarly utility pole I had run past dozens of times before stood out as the perfect subject. The nails and staples tell the story of how over the decades people have used this pole to communicate to their neighbors about things like garage sales, lost pets, political issues, or lawn services. I can imagine each person being hopeful to get a response or reaction from posters that have long since been removed or fallen away.

Editing

I processed this in my iPhone enhancing the contrast and shadows and converting it to black and white.

In my camera bag

I take my professional real estate and event photos with my Nikon D5600 and wide Sigma zoom lens. And for those everyday artistic moments I now carry an iPhone 12 Pro Max - wow, what a camera!
