I took this one (like many of my self portraits in my bedroom at home. The two skylights provide awesome natural light against the plain white walls.Time
It was around 3pm when I took this so the low sun was lighting up the oposite end of the room giving the whole room a glow but my end a particular softness.Lighting
I love natural light...and it's free to use. I'm learning new things everyday and have found that no matter if you use the same place and the same time of day the light creates a different vibe each time which I think helps creativity.Equipment
Taken on my Nikon d5300 with it's kit 18-50mm f3.5 lens. Mounted on a rusty old tripod that I don't know the name of and I also used a remote timer to allow myself to set up.Inspiration
I had just got home from window shopping a new lens which I can't yet afford but told myself that equipment doesn't matter so pushed myself to try taking some portraits to reasure myself that I am doing fine with the stuff I have. And Honestly the idea of reaching out to someone or something is something personal to me.Editing
I use Lightroom for at least 95% of all my editing along with vscofilm. I had previously taken some self portraits a few weeks ago in a similar lighting so I had saved my preset because I was really happy with the clean tone. However I found that there was too much grain and also wanted to tweek it further into something with more softness rather than the boosted clarity that I had on this preset. In my camera bag
I have a Langly Alpha Pro pack to make me feel like I live in Canada rather than the UK and take my nikon d5300 everywhere I go. Along with it I ocasionally take my Yashica film camera or my fujifilm 210 for those special film shots. I'll also have fieldnotes book for any ideas I have along the way to college or wherever I'm going, a larger notepad for my own personal writing and a sketchbook for doodles. All this combined with my everyday college stuff that I have 24/7.Feedback
Not feeling weird about taking self portraits is a big step forward for me. I don't have many people that I can work with everyday and building up the courage to ask them "can I take a photo of you" is hard as it is a very personal thing. I found that if you try and make the story or meaning behind the photo something personal to you it becomes easier to share with others and also creates a different mood each time. I think everyone (including myself) should rememeber that you don't need to have professioal cameras and lighting props to take a nice shot, it helps but isn't necessary. Thank you.
