This image was taken at Bodyline studio near Nottingham. I don't have my own studio, just the dream ! I hire studios for particular shoots, which is great in the sense of using top equipment without the expense of purchasing it. A studio still remains my dream, and Bodyline is the type to aim for.Time
The shot was taken midday, but as it was in a studio there was no lighting issue. I had to travel almost 100 miles to the studio but the trip was made worthwhile by the images that came from the shoot.Lighting
I kept lighting to a minimum for the shot. I had one main light fitted with a snoot to focus a narrow beam of light, and a secondary light to expose the rest of the set without overpowering the sense of almost prying into a private moment that the girl was having.Equipment
For this shot I used my trusty Canon 5D iii, with a 24-105 zoom. Its a great versatile lens and copes with most situations.Inspiration
The shot just presented itself really. It came about because of the set at the studio. I just thought that a dark moody image with a girl looking solemn or upset, seemed to fit in with the set rather than just a run of the mill "bath scene." I also liked the suggestion of almost prying on the girls private thoughts. I wanted the viewer to try to imagine what the girl was thinking about nd what had happened to her.Editing
Post processing was all about emphasizing the mood. Bringing down the shadows and lifting the highlights. Mainly done in Lightroom and finished off in PhotoshopIn my camera bag
First in the bag is my faithful Canon 5D iii. I have never been let down by this camera, but going back to my early days as a photographer and having a camera jam up on me, I always pack a spare body. My choice is a Canon 6D. I love the simplicity of the 6D but it still has a full frame sensor. the first lens in my bag is a Canon 85mm f/1.2L. this is just THE most amazing portrait lens. I love the lens's ability to get a really narrow depth of field and opens up so many options. For similar reasons I pack a Canon 50mm f/1.8L. I also pack a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L another great portrait lens. Finally in goes the versatile Canon 24-105mm zoom. I love landscape work and when shooting this style I also pack a Canon 17-24mm zoom and don't often take the 70-200 zoom. I also pack a full range of Formatt filters including ND, grads, polorizing filter, a massive 16 stop and a 10 stop ND. I carry a Manfrotto MT190CXPro4 carbon fibre tripod with a 3 way head. This is sturdy but light, so trudging over hill and through dale is not too arduous.Feedback
I was lucky in that the image struck me whilst in the studio. My only advice to anyone wanting to produce something different to the run of the mill shot is plan your shoot. Visualize what it is that you want to produce. Make a sketch if that helps. Finally don't be afraid of coming away with only one style of shot, stick at it and get the shot that you really want. Better to have one brilliant image than 20 ordinary shots.
