Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was captured just outside my hometown, Lancaster Pa. Little did I know, that this barn would be razed the following spring.

Time

I'm an early-morning or early evening photographer. As best I can remember, this image was taken on a snowing morning during a bit of a snowfall.

Lighting

Nothing special here, as the day was rather gloomy except for the white of the fallen snow. What I like best about this image is the contrast in drab colors due to the overcast of the moment.

Equipment

I used a Canon SX70 Powershot and, interestingly enough, this was hand-held in what I refer to as a "drive-by" shooting. In this particular area, there is no shoulder of the road where you can safely pull off the road. So, I stopped, I shot, and I drove away.

Inspiration

I thoroughly enjoy old things that appear new to me. I have a social media page on Facebook called ruinNATION. I love to capture things that have seen their best days, but to me, they appear as new because it may be the first time I've seen it or captured it with my lens.

Editing

No not with this particular image.

In my camera bag

I shoot with either a Canon SX70 (1365mm lens built in) or a Canon SL1 with a variety of lenses up to a 150X600mm. When shooting distance shots, I use either a monopod or a tripod, so they are part of my equipment too.

Feedback

Travel with camera in hand at all times. You never know when you're going to turn the corner and the next awesome will be starring you in the eyes. Like the Boy Scouts, always be prepared . . . cameras, camera cards, batteries, etc. Don't miss something memorable because you weren't prepared.
