This is a great shot. You should enter it in my challenge!

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken on a pretty murky day off southern Victoria, Australia about 1.5m depth (Breath hold diving). I had to get in closer than I'd usually prefer to the stingers to get a clear shot, especially as there was a bit of a surge moving it around.
Time
Early afternoon. Sunny conditions.
Lighting
Due to the amount of sediment in the water, using a flash only made things worse with backscatter, and I didn't have a strobe with me due to the choppy conditions. Fortunately the jellyfish wasn't far under the surface and diving down just below and to the side seemed to give nice natural lighting for the photo.
Equipment
s120 canon in a standard underwater housing.
Inspiration
I love the way jellyfish appear in the ocean, there's something surreal about them. They're usually seen as horrible, stinging, ugly creatures to be avoided, so it's great when I can get a photo like this hopefully showing them in a different light. This jellyfish was huge, and it had a cute little leatherjacket friend sheltering from predators, peaking out from under the bell to take a look at me.
Editing
The colours and contrast have been adjusted a bit back to what was seen on the day. A few larger pieces of sediment in the water have been cloned out as they distracted from the subject.
In my camera bag
I usually use my canon s120 in a standard canon housing without any lenses. I also often use an inon strobe.
Feedback
The closer you can safely get the better, especially in murky conditions to help with the colours and clarity. Natural light close to the surface is often better than a flash when the viz is poor to prevent backscatter.
