Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on scuba on a coral wall dive in Bunaken, Indonesia.

Time

It was in the middle of the day with the sun shining brightly down from above.

Lighting

The lighting was natural. No strobes were used for this shot. The water was amazingly clear as the turtles cruised past not far from us.

Equipment

Canon s90 camera in a canon underwater case.

Inspiration

The diving in North Sulawesi was amazing, from beautiful towering coral walls, to hidden critters in the black volcanic sands. I've always loved turtles though, the way they almost fly underwater. Finning along with seemingly little effort and gliding right past unconcerned. I guess i was trying to capture that feeling of flight through water, just the turtle with no busy backgrounds to distract from it.

Editing

This photo was taken in colour, but with the contrast I thought is would look nice in black and white.

In my camera bag

My underwater kit is generally fairly light. Most commonly now I'm using a canon s120 in an underwater case with or without my inon strobe.

Feedback

Sometimes with large animal underwater photography, there's an element of luck. Seeing the animal you're looking for, having it come close enough and also getting clear enough water to capture it successfully. Where ever possible, whenever I'm out in the ocean I try to have a camera with me, you never know what may happen along! If looking for turtles, going somewhere where they're frequently found and used to divers is obviously going to help a lot, ask the locals for advice on where to go.
