Behind The Lens

Location

Folly Beach, South Carolina, near the west end of the island. Folly Beach is about 15 miles from Charleston, S.C. I go there a lot for the scenery and to relax and enjoy the ocean. Folly is a barrier island with lots of dolphin and pelicans.

Time

It was early afternoon.

Lighting

It was typical mid-day summertime lighting. A few clouds but lots of sun. The light was harsh, I would say.

Equipment

Nikon D3000 with Nikon 70-300 mm autofocus

Inspiration

I was so instantly excited to see the osprey with the fish overhead that I just started firing the shutter and hoping for the best. I didn't have time to think about it because it all happened so quickly. I knew immediately that it was a moment to capture..

Editing

Yes, the best of the photos was too dark but I was able to bring it up out of the shadows using Lightroom. I did some cropping too. Tweaked the lighting a bit more in Lightroom for the best effect.

In my camera bag

These days, it's a Nikon D3300 and a Tamron 18-270 mm autofocus lens. I also carry a Nikon 18-55 mm autofocus but shoot mostly with the Tamron.

Feedback

It was just so purely in the moment that I really didn't have time to think about it. I just knew instantly it was something I wanted to capture so I raised the camera and started firing. Fortunately the autoexposure and autofocus were on. I had already set the white balance and ISO. At the time, I was just hanging out at the beach checking out the waves and shoreline. So I would say be open to the moment because sometimes unanticipated, wonderful things just present themselves.
