Location
This photo was taken from Key West, Florida looking toward the west. I was standing on the cruise ship wharf facing Sunset Key waiting for the sunset festivities to begin on Key West.Time
This image was taken at sunset. We were waiting around for the sun to set when I spotted the schooner approaching the far side of Sunset Key. The image came together and was highlighted by the fact that the island in the image is Sunset Key, how appropriate!Lighting
I looked for the image to have the oranges of sunset but retain some of the colors, particularly the colors in the flag. I didn't want a silhouette shot which would have been easy enough to accomplish but would also have been quite ordinary.Equipment
This was a handheld shot on an old Nikon digital camera, an E5700. The camera had a power zoom feature and this was taken at a focal length equivalent of about 125mm at ISO 100, f5.3, 1/250 sec.Inspiration
Great sunsets are always inspiring but having the image of the boat makes this more special. I thought the image would be striking and a little unusual. It is also a constant reminder for me of warm summer evenings especially on cold dark winter northeast nights.Editing
This image has no post processing. In my camera bag
I've upgraded somewhat since this image. I now generally carry a Nikon D3100 with a Sigma 18-300 zoom. I take along a Nikon 50mm f1.8 for nighttime shots since it is small and light. I also carry an Adorama 3Pod lightweight travel tripod, an extra battery, a circular polarizer, and a UV filter. Most of my images are made while travelling so I try to keep it light and compact enough to fit in a carry-on bag with my clothes.Feedback
Look for objects that will not necessarily always be there. In this photo, I was fortunate that the schooner was passing at the right time. I was also fortunate because this was the fourth day in a row where I went to the spot to capture a sunset and was the only evening that was clear enough to see the sun this close to the horizon. Persistence pays off.
