I took this photo in the hills near Daejeon, a regional city in South Korea, on Christmas Day 2015. The major objectives of my photohike were a temple and fortress wall, but I got hit by serendipity on the way down another path.Time
I guess about 3 pm (the file records the time I transferred it to my computer, not the time I took it). I’d been hiking and taking photos for about 4 hours, and was on the way down another path, not knowing exactly where I was. Almost anything less wouldn’t have stopped me.Lighting
Obviously, I had no control over the light, just over how I would capture it. It just happened to be clear, calm winter’s day, and the sun just happened to be at that angle, lighting the trees and throwing some shadow on the bottom of the hill, but leaving the dam entirely unlit and able to reflect the most possible.Equipment
I used a Canon SX610HS compact, which is the only camera I own, because I can slip into my pocket and take everywhere (although I take some photos on my phone if I want to post to Facebook immediately). As a ‘happy hobbyist’ photographer, my motto is ‘Keep it simple, stupid’.Inspiration

iPhoto has an all-purpose editing tool called ‘Enhance’, which I use on almost all of my ‘first choice’ photos (in effect, the ones I post to Viewbug). If I knew what all the other editing tools did, I’d spend more time post-processing that I would taking photos in the first place!In my camera bag
I have a full-sized tripod which I only take when I know I’m going to need it, for example up onto the roof to take a photo of the moon. I also have a small-sized tripod which I can put in my backpack when I’m photohiking, but I rarely use it. And I’ve got a selfie-stick (a friend gave it to me! I wouldn’t *buy* one!).Feedback
Keep looking and be prepared to explore! This dam was on a small side path, initially obscured by trees. I caught a glimpse of the sunlit trees through the shadowed trees next to the main path, and simply had to investigate. Some of my best photos have been serendipitous.
