As temperatures warm, birds are starting to become more active and that includes owls. Our bigger owl species are already incubating eggs or raising young (as Great Horned Owls start nesting in Janurary), while the smaller owls species (like this red morph Eastern Screech Owl) are beginning to start their courtship rituals. Mating season for screech owls can start as early as mid March and can run through mid May. Their call is very distinctive - as they quite often make a soft whinnying sound, and you may hear them calling at night, even in a residential community. This photo was taken last night in the front yard.
