Location
Taken at Baker Street Underground Station, London. A very unique and often photographed platform on the Circle Line. The London Underground network of stations is a treasure trove for any photographer interested in architecture and dramatic locations.Time
I wanted to capture the platform empty. Which as you can imagine is not easy on the London Underground. So I find myself, first thing on a saturday morning, waiting for almost an hour for that perfect moment.Lighting
The lighting at Baker Street is one of the reasons, along with the architecture, that makes it such a great location to capture. The illuminated arches cast light on the individual benches and create a pleasing repetition and symmetry, which is too good not to photograph.Equipment
My then trusty Sony A77II, with the Tamron 10-24mm. I would have loved to of had the use of a tripod, however TFL do not allow their use on the underground network. So with as steady a hand as possible, whilst keeping everything as central as possible, I pressed the shutter.Inspiration
I’m obsessed with London’s architecture and symmetry. This Baker Street platform clearly has it all. I’ve seen many other photographers take this shot and couldn’t resist pointing my camera in it’s direction. I have a shortlist of locations which are popular in London and I’m gradually working my way through them.Editing
Level adjustments in raw along with a little extra clarity and sharpness. I bumped up the contrast a little to give the lighting a little more definition and increased drama. In my camera bag
A few months ago I was a Sony kinda guy. However since then I’ve been seduced by the exceptional Fujifilm. I currently have an XPro2 and an X-T10, with an X-T2 soon to be added to my bag. Lens wise I always carry the 35mm 1.4 and the 10-24mm. Batteries are vital when it comes to Fujifilm as they are tiny and don’t have much grunt.Feedback
Best advice for a photograph like this is to get everything as straight and even as possible. You’ll need plenty of patience if you want the scene to be devoid of people. However don’t let this govern when you take the shot, as often a well position figure can really give the photograph some life. If you can use a tripod then you absolutely should, as this will help you frame the shot perfectly in camera and avoid any cropping in post.
