I took this photo close to my home in Edinburgh. There is a canal just behing our house and I go for a walk along the canal almost every day. Once you leave the houses it is just the Scottish countryside: fields and small woods.Time
Although it looks like it was taken in the evening, actually I took this photo in the early hours of the morning. I remember that morning last February when I was waken up very early by my flatmate who was leaving for work. I woke up quite grumpy, but then I saw the amazing, thick fog outside so immediately I decided to go out for photos before the fog lifts up - in Edinburgh the weather conditions change very quickly, from one minute to the other! I got dressed up in two minutes, grabbed my camera and managed to get to the nearby forest while it was still foggy.Lighting
There wasn't too much light due to the fog and the time of the day (it was about seven in the morning), only a diffuse glow with the sun just rising above the horizon.Equipment
I have a Canon 500D and this photo was taken with the kit lens (18-55mm).Inspiration
As I was walking in the fog, I spotted this patch of snowdrops on the other side of the canal. I saw the photo in my head at that very moment, but it actually took a good 15 minutes to find the perfect position for my camera so I can take this picture. I had to lie on the ground - which was still wet after the night, so I had to take my coat off and lie on that -, and then I had to angle my camera upwards as much as I could so the trees are in the frame too. It was an extremely uncomfortable position - and probably ridiculous too, but luckily no one saw me! However, I am so happy with the result that it was totally worth it.Editing
I did quite a bit of processing as the colours were dull because of the fog. I was thinking of going black and white with all the photos taken that day, but then I decided to try cooling down the sky and add more exposure to the flowers at the foreground in this one. I think it worked much better. In my camera bag
Now I always have my Canon 24-70mm lens and also my 50mm 1.4 Sigma lens with me.Feedback
In Edinburgh you have to act very fast when the conditions are favourable for a nice atmospeheric photo as you never know how long it will last! We often get mystical fog, spectacular rainbows, awe-inspiring cloud formations here but these all are ephemeral so you kind of always have to be ready with your camera. Make sure you have at least one fully charged battery, enough space on your SD card and of course have your camera with you all the time!
