Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken on a hiking trail close to my home. Being a self taught photographer I try to use every opportunity I can to practice my passion and this trail provides so many opportunities; not only occasional wild animals, but different lighting; interesting perspectives; to some it probably is nothing more than an nature trail, but everyday it surprises me with wonderful new challenges.

Time

I absolutely adore this photo and it almost did not happen. This was a raw, very gusty day and I had refrained from our walk in the hopes that the winds would drop; which they didn't. After supper my conscious got the better of me and we set out; I was leaving my camera at home and at the last minute I grabbed it. The walk was very uninspiring; I remember thinking that it was a waste of time lugging my camera along. We rounded the last bend and surprisingly this section was slightly protected from the wind. I attempted a few shots of leaves blowing, but they were lackluster at best. I was just going to grab up the leashes and head out when I noticed how vibrant Betty and her dog crew were against the dullness of the grey landscape. I climbed down in the ditch opposite the gang and started calling their names; as I focused on Betty a huge gust of wind whipped down the trail, flipping her hair and causing her to gaze at me in utter contempt; my shutter clicked at that exact moment. All I can say to anyone practicing this craft; you never know when that shot will happen; and sometimes it is the most usual things that make the most extraordinary pictures; take your camera and be patient. This shot was taken February 20 at 6:30 pm

Lighting

I love working with natural light. Mother Nature provides so many unique and interesting variables in lighting. This pictures is shot completely with natural light on a cloudy day in the early evening. It would be golden hour except there was no sun to create the golden effect. The lower level of light accounts for the shadows on the right side of Betty's face and the darkness of the background.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon Rebel T3i. Aperture f5.6, ISO 1250, shutter speed 1/640 and a 18-50 mm stock lens.

Inspiration

I love photographing people and animals; capturing the moment when their emotions are literally right there, so that looking at the picture afterwards you get the connection; like they are reaching out and touching you. My dogs are a constant source of photos; and I would love to say that I had this shot pre-planned and organized for weeks in advance; but I didn't. It was a right there, right now moment; the time that you get that feeling in your stomach or your heart or that tingle when you know that the moment is now; every photographer feels it; you just know..

Editing

I did not do alot of post-processing. I did crop the pic and clone out a tree branch that was distracting; of course I bumped up the colors just a touch. But that is it

In my camera bag

I do not have a huge amount of equipment; my Canon Rebel T3i; which I have considered upgrading, but gosh darn it; we are comfortable together; I have the stock 18-50mm lens, a 70-300 telephoto and a nifty 50 1.8 (which I rarely use) and a tripod. There are parts and pieces that I would like to get; but I also feel that the challenge of working with what I have makes me a better photographer; I learn to work with what I have and observe the world around me to achieve the results I want.

Feedback

There are two parts to this picture; photographing pets and spontaneous in the moment shot. The greatest mistake people make when photographing their pet is they shoot down on the animal; get down on their level; set your camera to "sport" or "rapid" so that you won't miss a moment; have a ton of treats and if possible have a helper who can use those treats to tempt fido off camera; remember though ... if your helper is standing then the animal will be looking up... don't just take fido or kitty out and plop them somewhere to take the pic... interact.. go for a walk, play ball, chase a mouse.. the picture will happen right then so be prepared (hence the assistant ) . The spontaneous part ... well there is not script for that. Take your camera, be ready; in the places and at the moments you feel would be the worst possible time it will hit you; the picture is always there .. just look .. open your eyes.. And most importantly enjoy; sometimes people get lost worrying about all the techincial aspects of a shot and miss the shot entirely.
