Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Masai Mara, Kenya during Great migration of 2015

Time

This photo was taken almost as sunset where the sen was setting behind the pile of dust which was created by wildebeests.

Lighting

It was getting dark and the sun was sitting on the other side of the river, leaving the confused animals between me and the sun, which created a dramatic scene, especially with the dust in place.

Equipment

I used my Canon 7D Mark II with Canon 400mm f5.6, handheld, and firing away at ten frames per second so i could choose the best photo later on, because with action like that, every frame counts.

Inspiration

When going on Safaris, i like to live the moment, every second of it, and not only wait for specific photos to take. Opportunities and luck, with some practice always pay off.

Editing

I did some post-processing in Lightroom since i shoot my photos RAW with flat profile. i tweaked overall contrast of the photo and enhanced the clarity of the zebras to stand out from the background. The warmer tone was increased slightly to give this rich warm colors.

In my camera bag

i would usually carry two bodies, one with a range zoom (for example 80-400mm) and another body with 400mm prime. I also keep a wide angle lens in case i was to do some environmental/landscape photos. Moreover, plenty of CF and SD cards and spare batteries come in handy.

Feedback

I always encourage colleagues to observe their surroundings well, and live every moment of their photographic journey, and not only wait to arrive specific destinations. Usually the best photos come from unplanned situations, so always keep your camera ready, and your eyes open. I dislike it when some people on safari just sleep in the car and wait for the guide to tell them "hey we have arrived the so and so area/or scene".
