Congrats on the challenge win! I will say it was tough to choose with so many great entries, but I thought yours had the most creative use of light. Well done!

Behind The Lens

Location

At home

Time

This was taken on a lazy weekend with my family

Lighting

I wanted to give the effect of looking out from the dark through blinds. To achieve this I cut slats in some thick black card which was held in front of the model's (my daughter) face and I used a single off-camera flash. The most difficult part was ensuring the light beams hit both eyes so many shots were taken.

Equipment

A very cheap setup is all that was needed. 35mm F/1.8 Nikon prime, yongnuo 560iii speedlight with a small softbox and grid.

Inspiration

The idea just appeared in my mind one day. Perhaps I had seen something similar and it was still rattling around in my subconscious. Although this is not my technically best image it is one of my favorites as it ended up exactly as pictured in my head.

Editing

Increased clarity in Adobe Raw, converted to monochrome and played with curves in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Nikon D7200, 35mm F/1.8 prime lens, 60mm Nikon Micro lens, yongnuo 568ex and 560ii speedlights, kenko extension tubes, rogue flashbender+diffusion panel. lots of gels, filters etc.

Feedback

Using home made light modifiers with flashes can produce striking results. In this photo, I used a peice of black card with slats cut out but there is no limit to what you can achieve with some imagination and experimentation.
