Behind The Lens

Location

Hamilton Island in Whitsundays, Queensland. Australia

Time

Morning at around 11 am

Lighting

The symmetry of the light and the position of the cockatoos struck me as a great moment to grab the camera!

Equipment

Canon 70D, 50mm lens, hand-held with no flash shot in raw

Inspiration

I came out with some food to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Catseye beach from our balcony overlooking the water, and there were all these cockatoos on the neighbour's balcony looking very interested in what was on my plate. They kept mimicking each other's movements exactly which was kind of mesmerizing so I made sure my food was safe and grabbed the camera.

Editing

Just a little colour correction, contrast, clarity and a tweak of the shadows in photoshop to get a stylised look out of it.

In my camera bag

It used to be just a Canon 70D, a Canon nifty fifty 1.4 lens, and a Tamron 70-200mm when going off on holiday hoping to get some great images. Keeps it light and manageable. Now I have upgraded to a Sony A7Sii as I usually shoot more video than stills, while it's geared toward video I find I get a cracking image from it and a lot of the time find I'm just running around with that, the 50mm, and a variable ND filter. Easier to move around with and forces more creativity with only one lens!

Feedback

The old saying is so true: 'The best camera is the one you have on you'. There have been plenty of times when I have gone out with all the gear I could physically carry with the aim of capturing something fantastic only to come back with duck eggs, and others when I've had nothing but an iPhone and grabbed something stunning. Simply because I was there at the right place at the right time. Having said that, if you do happen to have the right gear with you at the right time then the best thing is to know enough about your camera's capabilities that when the opportunity comes along, your brain goes into auto pilot as to what setup you need to grab a great image without wasting any time.
