Cairns Australia is a lovely place to have a holiday and that is where I took this shot. Along the esplanade there is a sandy beach and the pelicans just seem to love the area. They sit there by the dozens and enjoy the sun and sand allowing people to come fairly close without being bothered.Time
The path along the esplanade is enjoyable any time of day or night but the pelicans are not always about.I got lucky one day just after lunch as I caught them there and by the look of it they were having lunch too!!Lighting
This particular day was a bit overcast but there was enough light to get a half way decent shot.Equipment
I have since upgraded my camera to the Nikon D7100 but this shot I took with my old camera which is a Nikon D3200. A nice sized little camera for taking on walks or treks. I used a 55-300 zoom lens on this shot. That lens is my favorite for sure!!Inspiration
We have been farming for years and therefore animals are a big part of our lives. I have been taking animal shots since I took up photography and with all the animals around it was a good starting point. Animals are still my favorite subject and I take several thousand photos of different animals a year. This shot was one of many I took of these pelicans and I love it.Editing
I generally do edit my photos on my computer after taking them. This particular shot I added a bit of fill light since it was a cloudy day and also brought in a bit more saturation to bring out the pink in the pelicans bill.In my camera bag
I try to keep my bag as light as possible so I usually only pack one camera and generally it's my Nikon D7100. My favorite lens, as I mentioned before, is my Nikkor 55-300 lens. I also pack my 18 - 55 kit lens and my macro Nikkor 85mm lens just in case there might be something close to shoot!!Feedback
Cairns is a beautiful place to photograph and if pelicans are what you'd like to take photos of then you have to be lucky that they will be there. If they are then you just need patience, time and love for animal photography.
