Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the west side of Mobile Bay on the south side close to the causeway to Dauphin Island, Alabama

Time

I'm an early bird. I usually get up, get a cup of coffee and head out the door. I'm always watching the eastern sky to see if there are clouds or is it a cloudless night with the stars coming out. I also always check the weather to see the exact time of sunrise and sunset as it changes throughout the year. This was a sunrise at about 5:30am

Lighting

This was taken with a large aperture to help give the star effect on the sun. It also gives a little longer shutter speed to smooth out the water.

Equipment

I used a Sony A6000 with a 16-50mm lens. Since this is an HDR photo it is a combination of 5 shots. Five exposers at 0.5 stops apart. I use a tripod to keep it steady and a wireless remote to trigger the shutter.

Inspiration

I'm always looking for those great sunrises and sunsets. I learned that you need a combination of sun, clouds and something in the foreground to make it interesting. If its just sun and water its rather boring. It also has to be the right type of clouds and not real thick or it blocks out the sun. So that morning while out trying to capture the piers in the sun I noticed this old pine tree stump and though it would add to the shot. I collapsed my tripod all the way down and flipped up the viewing screen to make the composition. I took several sets of brackets photos using different settings.

Editing

Since this is HDR I used photomatrix to make the composite image. Trying hard not to over process it and keep it realistic. I then bring it into apple aperture and run Topaz denoise as the combination of 5 photos amplifies the noise. Once the digital noise is removed I used aperture to adjust the contrast and colors and I added a little photo sharpening on it.

In my camera bag

I try to keep my camera bag light. Its actually small so I can't put to much in it and weigh it down. The heaviest item is a tamron 150-600mm lens with an a-mount to e-mount adapter. There is a also 55-210mm sony lens. I also cary a spare sony a-6000 body with a couple of extra batteries. A couple of lens cloths and seeing how all my photography is outdoors I carry a small bottle of bug spray and suntan lotion. Most of the time the tamron is on the camera.

Feedback

Most all of my sunrise and sunset photos involve water so while traveling around I'm always searching for locations that face east or west. In the summer time the sun rises and sets further north on the horizon and further south in the winter. This is most important as you need to know where the sun is going to be. Watch the weather. You want those high puffy clouds. If you can catch the right front moving in, its magic. Always keep an eye out for new locations during the day. Pick it ahead of time and get there and setup before the sun rises or sets. You have to plan ahead and make it happen when the conditions are right. Its not a rush job. Good luck.
