Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Lost Dutchman State Park, near Apache Junction, Arizona. I am a self-taught photography and really love all the amazing places for photography in Arizona.

Time

This photo was taken in the early evening on a cool Winter day at the end of February.

Lighting

Arizona has a lot of beautiful sunsets. I like the time of the day, between 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, where you can get the better colors from the sun and light (warmer colors).

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100, a 20 mm Nikon lens. No filters were used. No flash nor tripod.

Inspiration

I grew up watching Cowboy and Indian movies that showed the glory of Arizona. Now that I live here, I want to display the majesty of the Wild West - the mountains, saguaros, desert, vegetation, wildlife.

Editing

I shoot all my pictures in RAW, and post process my photos in Lightroom. I try not to over saturate my photos and convey what I actually saw that day with each photograph.

In my camera bag

I carry in my large camera bag the Nikon D7100, a 20mm Nikon Prime Lens, a 80-400mm Nikon Lens, filters (ND, Solar, night), a remote, cleaning supplies, memory cards.

Feedback

To me, photography is like painting. What I always try to do is seeing the picture as a canvas, trying to balance colors and objects. The picture guides you to what you want to show (i.e., a lake, the mountain, etc.). Keeping the balance like a river to show something. It's important to not have the picture be too busy, good space management with the objects and appealing to the eye. It's vital to put your focal point in context. For example, if you're shooting the Milky Way, it's important to combine it with mountains, trees, a river while giving it enough space so the Milky Way IS the main subject and you can see that. Your photograph should tell a story.
