Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. Closer to the South, and on the west coast of the island there is a forest called Avatar Grove due to the intricate and large tree natural configurations. I was doing an off-road trip across the island and stumbled on this gem, just off a gravel road.

Time

Around mid day, with the sun in full force lighting up the canopy overhead and filtering through the branches.

Lighting

In nature it can be really hard to capture what the eyes see. Sometimes the only alternative is HDR photography.

Equipment

Had my trusty Canon 7D, with a cheap Rokinon, manual fisheye that I just picked up to test out. Was surprised how well the lens was performing for the price.

Inspiration

The beautiful shapes of the trees made them look even more alive than normally. I wanted to capture them from an angle that would portray how large they are.

Editing

Due tot he large contrast in lighting between the sky and the ground, I did this as an HDR and blended 3 different images together. Mainly working in Lightroom and Photoshop to balance the lighting to resemble more of what the eye saw. No other alterations were done.

In my camera bag

All depends on where I'm going. If I'm hiking I keep it light, a Canon SL1 with an 18-135mm for general shooting, a Sigma 8-16 for moments like this and large landscapes, and a Canon 75-300 for wildlife. If I'm off-roading I usually also grab the Canon 7D as my other camera, and a bunch more lenses including some primes and the Sigma150-500mm, a flash, and a tripod or two.
