Behind The Lens

Location

The yellow rose was in my garden in Half Moon Bay, California.

Time

I woke up on my day off and wanted to go out to do some photography around 10:00 A.M.

Lighting

I was disappointed that it was a rainy day but that was common in Half Moon Bay. I knew the overcast sky would provide some diffused light for the flowers plus the addition of water droplets would add another layer to the interest in this flower.

Equipment

I used A Nikon D90, no flash, hand held. I used a shallow depth of field before thinking, so quickly changed to a smaller opening. When I looked at my photos later, I discovered the shallow depth of field was the most interesting,

Inspiration

I love flowers. I do understand I am not the only one so I look for different ways to photograph them. I grow flowers in my garden so I have easy access to them. They are especially beautiful in the spring and with the rainy day, I had that added element of interest.

Editing

I did enhance the photo by sharpening and increased the color saturation slightly,

In my camera bag

I now use a Nikon D5100. For macro work I use a 60 mm AF Macro Nikkor lens.

Feedback

The most important thing is using a macro lens of your choice and a tripod. Most times when I am lazy and grab my camera not wanting to haul around a tripod, I fail. This yellow rose was a happy accident. Without a tripod, most are unhappy accidents.
