Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a dog walking path a couple miles out of the city I live in, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I was practicing my photography skills, for a class I had later that week, so I drug my sister along with me to be my model.

Time

I was hoping that the clouds would clear and I'd get the golden light of the mid-morning, but the clouds stayed adding to the mood of the photograph I think.

Lighting

I was hoping for different lighting, but I was surprised out how well this photo turned out, it's not what I was expecting. If the perfect lighting doesn't happen, work with what mother nature gives you.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon Rebel T5i, with a 18mm-135mm lens, no tripod or flash.

Inspiration

My project assignment was to portray motion blur, but after I got the motion shots, I wanted a closeup especially since my sister was wearing blue and it really made her eyes pop.

Editing

Not really any post-processing with this photo that I can recall. Maybe a bit of enhancing and that's about it.

In my camera bag

I'm still trying to figure out what is best to carry around with me, but since I only have one lens, it makes things a little easier. Other than that I carry an extra battery, my battery charger, and my lens cleaning kit.

Feedback

This was kind of a spontaneous capture, but I would say shallow depth of field is big, make sure you've got all your settings just right for the lighting. I was very lucky with this shot, so the best advice I can give is keep practicing!!
