Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, Ca. A beautiful wedding on a beautiful day in a beautiful venue!

Time

It was a late afternoon wedding, clear skies, a soft breeze ....

Lighting

My favorite lighting is always available natural light, as was the case here. There is something better, softer, more appealing about natural light than artificially created light. The afternoon sun was low in the sky and the sunlight was falling perfectly over the bride and groom!

Equipment

I was a guest, not the photographer for hire. But I always carry a small camera with me to every event when possible. In this case I had taken a small Sony DSC-HX9V. A small camera, not one you would ordinarily think to use for special occasions, but very versatile, great zoom, wide range for light and dark subjects and, easy to use without disturbing the other guests seated around me, and of course, small enough to carry in my purse!

Inspiration

I loved the atmosphere and the 'feel' of the moment. It was so very casual and elegant at the same time, and just seemed the perfect setting for that first gentle kiss between husband and wife. That was the only time I stood up during the ceremony to take a picture (I took it as quickly as I could and sat back down again so I wouldn't hide the moment from those sitting behind me!). And it was worth it.

Editing

Yes. The original photo was color. I wanted to emphasize the bride and groom, (dressed in black and white), and not have the multi-color flowers, blue sky, and colorful ribbons tied to the wedding arch, and the blue sky take any of the attention away from them. So I converted the background to black and white and softened the lines.

In my camera bag

Always a camera in my purse. Always one or two other camera and accessories in my car.

Feedback

Have your camera out and set to shoot even before you see that one moment that you want to capture. Pay attention to what is evolving. You have a better chance of clicking the shutter at just the right time if you can anticipate the shot.
