Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on our farm in the Free State. We live next to the Vaalriver in Hoopstad.

Time

This photo was taken at 08h30.

Lighting

I only used sunlight. It was a sunny South African day.

Equipment

Canon 7D MkII Tamron 150mm-600mm lens Benro monopod UV filter

Inspiration

I started to photograph birds because here are so many of them on our farm. During the past 2 years I have captured 160 different species on the farm. I love this little kingfisher for its self-confidence. After diving into the water to catch a feast he shake off the water and then show off his beautiful crest.

Editing

I only cropped the photo.

In my camera bag

Canon 7D MkII, Tamron 150-600mm, Tamron 16-300mm, Canon flash, UV filter, cleaning equipment

Feedback

You need to get as close as possible to the bird you want to photograph. You can achieve this by sitting in a hide, which is a privilege that I don't have. I pick a spot where I can sit and wait for some kind of bird to approach me. You need to have the sun at your back. For this kingfisher I put a stick in the water to serve as a perch. You have to be very quiet and patient. Then with luck some bird will show up and surprise you. Be careful not to scare the bird!!
