Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken in the Southern Highlands area of NSW in the town of Moss Vale. It is a beautiful region with rolling hills and green pastures. The willows are in a park behind the shopping centre. I stumbled upon the glorious scene purely by chance. I was on my way to pick up a patient to drive them to their hospital appointment and got lost! After the appointment I returned to the park to capture the scene. As always my camera comes with me almost everywhere.Time
It was mid morning and the low sun of autumn was streaming through the trees.Lighting
Early morning! Such a great time to take photos. The rays of the early morning sun lit up the golden leaves beautifully and cast the trunks into shadow. The contrast between light and dark created a challenge to getting the right exposure so I knew that had to take several shots to make sure I got the exposure right.Equipment
My camera is a Canon 7D and my lens was a Canon 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS zoom. I used a tripod too.Inspiration
The stunning autumnal colours and beautiful morning light just cried out for a photo. The scene was perfectly photogenic. As soon as I had discharged my duties I hurried back to capture the scene.Editing
The deep shadows and bright leaves meant that there would have to be some post processing. I always shoot in raw/jpeg combination to make sure as much data as possible is available. I developed the raw image with Adobe camera raw paying particular attention to highlights and shadows and also the luminosity of the leaves. I then used Adobe Photoshop to do some detail editing. In my camera bag
I have two different bags. My go everywhere bag contains my Canon 7D camera with my standard 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens attached and a Canon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens. It also contains several memory cards, a backup fully charged battery, circular polarizing filter and a 9 stop ND filter. I usually have a tripod as well. If I am actually going out to take photos then I take my large camera backpack which contains an 18-55mm Canon zoom lens with a macro filter attached, a set of extension tubes, adapter rings for different size lenses, cable and wireless shutter release and camera rain sleeve.Feedback
Be prepared! I always carry my on the go camera bag with extra flash cards and fully charged extra battery in my car. Although early morning and late afternoon are optimal times for photography a scene or landscape can appear at any time of day. If you aren't prepared the moment is lost! So I also carry a small pocket camera with a zoom lens and raw capability in my handbag, just in case! If you are interested in photographing a scene such as my autumn willows then the best time will be morning or afternoon. It is a good idea to go out and reconnoiter the area and find your subject then check whether the lighting will be better in the morning or afternoon. You will need to have a tripod and take several shots using different aperture and/or ISO settings. Pst processing will also be important.
