January 2003, a devastating fire raged throughout the Kosciuszko National Park in the alpine region of southern NSW, Australia. 1-5 of the park was lost to this raging inferno that was started by a lightening strike. In general, eucalyptus trees regenerate after a fire, but this was was of such severity that the trees were burnt beyond the possibility of regrowth. 13 years later an understory has emerged but the white bleached skeletons of those burnt trees remain as a reminder.
